Shounen Ashibe' Gets New TV Anime Adaptation in Spring 2016



A new anime adaptation of Hiromi Morishita's gag manga Shounen Ashibe has been announced to air on NHK ETV from April 5. The series, titled Shounen Ashibe: Go! Go! Goma-chan, will air on Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. in the time slot currently occupied by Omakase! Miracle Cat-dan.

Shounen Ashibe, serialized in Young Jump magazine between 1988 and 1994, follows the daily life of first-grader Ashibe Ashiya and his spotted seal pet Goma-chan. At the time, Shounen Ashibe changed the direction of 4-koma manga with its rich character drama. It sold five million copies among six collected volumes as of 1992 according to The Anime Encyclopedia. Shueisha eventually published eight volumes of the manga, while Futabasha later published a two-volume selection of chapters.

Pony Canyon released an OVA adaptation in 1990. Television network TBS later produced two series, Shounen Ashibe (1991) and Shounen Ashibe 2 (1992), animated by Life Work.
